Now That's Just Funny!
Last night there was an incredibly impressive storm. It involved a phenomenal lightning display matched only by equally impressive peals of thunder. It seemed as if the lightning lit up the entire sky, and the sound of the thunder reverberated across the land. It was beautiful to behold through the large picture window within the sanctuary of our living room.
Then it happened. Late in the evening, there came a sudden scratching at the front door! Needless to say, we were both startled by the sound. Turning on the floodlights outside and looking through the window, we discovered a small dog scratching feverishly at the front door. It apparently was not as enamored with the beauty and majesty of the storm as we were, while outside in the storm. She sought instead to enjoy the safety of our sanctuary and the comfort of our company, which she did for the entire night.
We hosted this “stranger” in our home for the night giving her food, water, shelter, and reassuring her that all would be well. And, indeed, all did turn out well as her owners picked her up this morning happy yet confused since she had never done such a thing before. Storms. They can be scary, confusing, and overwhelming. They can cause us to make decisions we normally would not make. Thay can catch us unaware outside of our sanctuary and comfort.
If you’re in such a place in life right now, take heart. Jesus has promised to be our comfort and our sanctuary (Matt. 11:28-29; Heb. 13:6-7). So keep “scratching” at the door, aka keep praying and seeking the Lord. If you are safe inside and comfortable, keep listening, stay alert. You may hear someone scratching at your door who needs your assurance, and all will be well when the Master shows up.
